  3. How does VentSim determine whether the fan will work by blowing in air or exhausting air? I input the data from a fan (blowing) and VentSim simulates first as if the fan is exhausting air. Why does it happen? That way, I have to put the fan running in reverse mode.

  10. Thanks for the answer. To calculate the power of the fans, I fixed the flow at the air exits (exhaust fans) of the mine. Then I simulate the pressure loss (Pressure Collar TP) on these exits. With these values (flow and pressure loss = Pressure Collar TP), I select the fans. I would like to know how to obtain the calculation report for the pressure loss (Pressure Collar TP) calculated. Does the Ventsim program generate this type of report?

  14. In radon simulation, the dosage / year is a function of radon gas, radon progeny, radioactive and gamma ray. Right or wrong? The Effective Dose is ED u/g miner = RP + RG + RD + G RP = Radon Progeny (WLM) RG = Radon Gas (Bq/Yr) RD = Radioactive Dust (Bq/Yr) G = Gamma (mSv)

  16. A tool that calculates the DAC (Derived Air Concentration) Explaining ... Long Lived Radioactive Dust (LLRD) is something totally different than radon progeny. You inhale radon progeny and, after a few hours, it will all have decayed and nothing is left in your lungs. LLRD is fine uranium ore. It has a half life of a few billion years. So, it stays radioactive in your lung longer than radon progeny. As a result, the dose per unit intake is higher and the allowed intake is lower. A “DAC” is concentration that, if you breathed it all year, would give you 20 mSv dose. LLRD concentration are difficult to predict. LLRD is controlled by keeping the ore wet when loading etc and standing up-wind of drilling etc.

Another way of calculating radon production due to water percolation: V m3/day waterflow for ore with grade A ppm and density equal B t/m3 : Ew =A gU/t x B t/m3 x C Bq/gU = D Bq/m3 (Ore) D Bq/m3 (Ore) x 1 m3 (Ore) / 0.1 m3 (Water)( Supposed amount of water in 1 m3 of ore)= E Bq/m3 (Water) Ew = E Bq/m3 (Water) x V m3 (water/day) x 0.85 (e.g.,emanation from water)=F Ew = F/day/24/3600 Ew = Fx60 Bq/min => Ew = G Bq/min Observation: See my answer in suggestion 1 (Radon simulation Suggestion 1).
  20. The grade times the mass gives you the total amount of U. Ra will be in secular equilibrium with U. The specific activity of U is 12350 Bq/g. Each Bq of Ra makes 1 atom of Rn per second. That gives you the amount of Rn (in atoms) generated inside the ore. Multiply by the emanation fraction to get the amount released (in atoms). Multiplying that by 0.0000021 converts atoms of Rn to Bq. For the water, its very similar. The emanation fraction, in that case, will give you the fraction of the radon that stays in the ore vs what gets into the pore space.
  21. I believe it would be interesting to discern the contributions of radionuclides to WL. Since WL is the sum WL = (WL) RaA + (WL) RaB + (WL) RaC. Those are the radon progeny. The definition of the Working Level (WL) is the potential alpha energy contained in the radon progeny. So, you need to know the progeny concentrations to be able to calculate WL. In radiological / radioprotection terms it is also interesting to know the distribution of radionuclides (solid elements) inside the underground mine. For understanding, I suggest you read the paper (Engineers' guide to the elementary behavior of radon daughters by Robley D. Evans). I can send the article to your email, if you want it.
