Correct, it detects the diameters of the connecting pipes and applies a contraction or expansion as appropriate. If there is no change in diameter of the connected pipes then Pumpsim applies it either as an expansion or a contraction, but you shouldn't be using this junction type on a node that doesn't have a change in pipe diameter.
